Welcome to Northumberland

North Cottage is part of Thornton Tower Farm which has been in the Gibson Family for over a century.
Hexham, 5 miles to the East, has a variety of shops including several large supermarkets, independent stores and sights of historical interest including the stunning Hexham Abbey and Old Gaol.

A few miles further East brings you to Corbridge – a quaint “village” (as it is fondly referred to) with a host of lovely gift shops, tearooms, antique centres, several pubs and eateries plus The Corbridge Cook shop which sells everything you never knew you needed and more.

Venture To The City

We are roughly 2-2 ½ hours away from Edinburgh, Leeds, Glasgow and York, and just half an hour from Newcastle-upon-Tyne; a vibrant city with plenty of museums, shops, theatres, restaurants and an infamous nightlife – just remember that proper Geordies don’t wear a coat on a night oot!

Travelling north from Newcastle you will find a whole host of beautiful places to visit –
Alnwick, Bamburgh, Seahouses and some of the most incredible beaches – white sands stretching for miles, largely empty, often chilly but always stunning.

Explore The Countryside

Going west from Newbrough you will find Haydon Bridge with a Co-op, a few pubs and our closest train station. 4 miles on is Bardon Mill, with it’s amazing pottery producer Errington Reay. and then Haltwhistle, which has a number of small shops, a modest sized Sainsburys and another train station.

Brampton is a few miles further on with more small shops and pubs and if you keep going you will find Lanercost Priory (EH) which for a time in 1306 became the centre ofNational Affairs as a gravely ill King Edward became too ill to follow his armies and had to stay the Winter at The Priory – incidentally, that same King Edward stayed a night at Thornton Tower around the same time.

Keep going and you will hit Carlisle with its gorgeous Cathedral, Tully Castle and the M6 motorway with excellent links to Scotland, The Lake District and beyond.

Activities On The Doorstep

Wether walking and exploring is your cup of tea, or homemade cake in a country coffee shop is more for you, Northumberland has so much to offer.
We are incredibly lucky to have historic, beautiful countryside on our doorstep, yet remain close to vibrant towns and a hive of activity.
