Endless Activity & Fun
We are always on hand to answer your questions and happy to make recommendations on places to visit and tailored options to suit you and your family. Here are a few of our ideas, in the drinks cabinet you will find leaflets on local places of interest.

HISTORY
This area of Northumberland is steeped in Roman History. The whole route of the A69 road between Newcastle and Carlisle runs roughly parallel to Hadrian’s Wall, an historical masterpiece stretching 73 miles cross country and completed in AD122. One of the finest stretches of the Wall, including the famous “Sycamore Gap”, is 9 miles from North Cottage and makes for a lovely day out. Park at either Northumberland National Park’s showpiece, The Sill or at the neighbouring Twice Brewed Inn where you can enjoy great food, beer from the on-site microbrewery and experience the only Planetarium in the North of England
(tickets required).
In close proximity to The Twice Brewed Inn there is Housesteads Roman Fort (NT/EH), Vindolanda and The Roman Army Museum (one ticket, two destinations) and then there is Chesters Roman Fort (EH) approximately 4 miles away from North Cottage.
STARGAZING
All around us we have some of the clearest and least light polluted skies in Europe. Take a walk up the road towards the farm buildings, continue up the hill and look skyward – so many constellations are visible on a clear night it is quite something.
If you want to learn more about the galaxies, The Twice Brewed Inn has a variety of stargazing events on offer – check seasonal calendar – plus as mentioned, has recently opened the only permanent planetarium in the North of England.
WALKING/CYCLING/
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
This is walking country; there are masses of walks such as The Pennine Way as well as cycle routes including the Sandstone Way. Or take a map, clothing for all eventualities, some sturdy boots and go off exploring – we promise you won’t be disappointed.
For those seeking different activities, there are various places for paddle boarding along The River Tyne (planned experiences can be booked through Alexander Adventures), many wild swimming locations and if you fancy going for a running PB, Tyne Green Park Run is on every Saturday at 9am in Hexham.
PUBS & DINING
We are farmers and as such, we are proud of the amazing produce available all around us and are real cheerleaders for all things Northumbrian! We have some excellent pubs and restaurants close by and can happily recommend The Milecastle Inn and The Twice Brewed Inn close to Hadrian’s Wall, Il Piccolo in Corbridge, Vercelli’s, The Beaumont and The Heart of Northumberland in Hexham and for a very special occasion, Hjem in Wall which holds a Michelin Star and is a real pioneer of local produce.
For a takeaway we would suggest a curry from Indus Valley in Hexham or Acomb Tandoori and the best Chinese in our opinion comes from The Amber in Corbridge.
